Tackling sight loss prediction

"The number of people experiencing sight loss in the UK is expected to double by 2050 a prediction which the UK Vision Strategy is working to prevent becoming a reality.Delegates attending the fourth Vision UK annual conference on Tuesday (June 12) heard about ways to improve diagnosis and establish better care and treatment procedures, with the overall aim being to improve eye health, eliminate avoidable sight loss and increase inclusion for people living with sight loss.Hosted at the Queen Elizabeth II conference centre in Westminster, London, it was attended by more than 400 delegates.Addressing delegates, parliamentary under-secretary of state for quality, Lord Howe (pictured), said: “I am delighted that eye health is now a public health priority in England. This is thanks to the UK Vision Strategy partnership which brings organisations together to work as one. The eye health indicator in the public health outcomes framework is a shining example of what collaboration can achieve.”Chair of Vision 2020 UK, Nick Astbury, added: “Losing your sight should never become a naturally accepted part of getting older. Over half of all sight loss in this country can be avoided if it is picked up early and treated. Taking regular exercise, eating a healthy diet and stopping smoking is also vital for keeping your eyes healthy.”Next year’s conference will be held at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference centre in London on June 11, 2013."
